Facebook has recently announced a new business venture that shocked the online dating community and investors, especially this news came out during investigation into the Cambridge Analytics scandal.
A new application called ‘dating’ is going to be released by Facebook in the near future to connect and find potential long-term partners using Facebook data as a primarily tool.
The objective for this app as announced by Mark Zuckerberg is to find authentic long-term relationships, not just flings and short-term hookups as populated by majority of dating apps such as Tinder.
Facebook ‘dating’ app allows users to create a duplicate profile that is only visible to the users. The creation process is completely hidden from your friends and family, and Facebook won’t share or post any posts regarding your activity.
Critics raised an important concern regarding privacy of the user data especially after a recent scandal with Cambridge Analytics which questionably obtained over 80 million Facebook users’ private info without their consent.
Other dating apps are also concerned about the entrance of Facebook dating app due to the high level of influence of Facebook to easily monopolize the online dating industry.
Many online dating apps such as Tinder are heavily depended on Facebook to operate their applications. Tinder has had experienced policy issues with Facebook that it had to stop operating for a short while due to Facebook data policy changes.
This means that Facebook has the power and the incentives to make data sharing policy exclusive to them in order to block off its competitors such as Tinder, Match.com, Bumble and OkCupid.
It is still not clear if the newly released ‘dating app’ by Facebook will be widely used by its database due to repeated privacy breaches in the past.
